Appliqued panels like this one (it is not actually quilted) were made to imitate Indian printed cotton spreads, called palampores. Makers strategically cut out printed chintz fabrics and appliqued them onto a base fabric to form images such as the ubiquitous Tree of Life design, as seen here.
