Susan Shie developed a relationship with feminist artist Miriam Schapiro when Schapiro spent time as an artist-in-residence at the College of Wooster in Ohio. Shie was inspired through her friendship with Schapiro. Shie has developed a distinctive style in her work by combining quilting, woman-centered imagery, and stream-of-consciousness diary entries across her quilts.
