Oil Rig is one of six pieces in Jo Budd’s Lowestoft series inspired by industrial buildings and seascapes. She probes the materiality of fabric--weight, flexibility, translucence--in her layered works. In 2010, Michael James described her quilts as both ambitious and larger-than-life but with a keen understanding of the “subtle modulations in small areas on the textile’s surfaces as well as the broader abstract territory of the composition.”
