Digital photography allows museums to preserve their collections through images. These same images allow museums to track changes in their objects over time. Detail photographs like this one of the hundreds of names stitched on a quilt allow researchers to regularly refer back to the images to conduct genealogical analysis without having to handle the quilt too often. These images are also ideal ways for institutions to share their collections with the public or with scholars unable to travel to the collection.
