Like many Amish quilts, this one was made by a mother for a child. In many Amish settlements, mothers typically gave a quilt to their children when they left their parents’ home. Elizabeth Miller made this for her son Edward, inscribing it: “E.J.M” and “Feb. 15, 1922” in the quilting stitches. Frequently, Amish women hosted quilting frolics at which friends and relatives gathered around a quilting frame to complete the stitches.
