Hawaiian Islanders did not have a tradition of quiltmaking until they came into contact with white settlers. They did, however, make bed coverings with pounded bark cloth, or tapa. These covers were called kapa moe and their makers decorated them with abstract floral designs, much like those in this and other Hawaiian applique quilts.
