In 1986, the Museum of American Folk Art and 3M corporation sponsored The Great American Quilt Festival to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. Paulette Peters’ The Promise was one of 52 shown in the exhibition in New York City. Although not directly portraying the Statue of Liberty, she references the promise of prosperity and freedom offered to immigrants entering through Ellis Island.
