Here the quiltmaker used a sewing machine to appliqué the basket’s handle to the ground. According to Barbara Brackman, many quiltmakers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries opted to employ sewing machines for these detailed appliqués, whereas today’s traditional quiltmakers choose to hide their tiny hand appliqué stitches.
