Prior to the Whitney exhibit, few people outside Amish settlements were familiar with Amish made quilts. Holstein and van der Hoof featured only one in Abstract Design, this Bars quilt, but it helped launch a thriving art market for a certain variety of Amish quilts: those pieced from richly-colored solid fabrics in simple geometric designs, what some Amish individuals call “old dark quilts” and became known among connoisseurs as “classic Amish quilts.” Following the Whitney exhibit, curators and dealers organized exhibitions exclusively featuring Amish quilts, and their prices rose dramatically.
