Yvonne Wells is a folk artist from Alabama. A retired teacher, she initially tried making quilts according to patterns used by other quilters. Although she makes a variety of quilt styles, she prefers narrative quilts that often include religious, Biblical, or civil rights themes. Wells challenges a one-dimensional identity others have attributed to her as an African American quiltmaker. She argues that this doesn't say enough about the individuality of expression she includes in her work, preferring to also identify herself as an artist who makes folk art in the quilt medium.
