This quilt made by African American maker Catherine Summerville in Aliceville, Alabama, shares much in common with Carrie Severt’s strip quilts, like the one in the previous image. These two quiltmakers, of different races from different regions, likely shared a thrifty attitude of making serviceable quilts from leftover fabrics. Class, rather than race, may have had more of a factor in what their quilts looked like.
