In Hidden in Plain View: The Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad, one of the quilt patterns purportedly used to direct runaways on the Underground Railroad is Double Wedding Ring. This pattern, however, dates to the late 1920s, when Capper’s Weekly published it. Many of the patterns referenced as part of a code date to after the Civil War. Such evidence leads many historians to doubt the existence of a quilt code as outlined in Hidden in Plain View.
