Costa Rican Celita de Cabezas made her quilt for the IQSC’s 1998 contest and exhibition, Expressions of Freedom: Celebrating 50 Years of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. About the piece she said: “I was inspired by the decorative style and color scheme of pre-Columbian vessels since our ceramists were masters in the art of incorporating in their work stylized daily scenes, loaded with symbolism.”
