In 1975, Charlotte Robinson, Alice Baber, and Dorothy Gillespie formulated a plan for artists and quilters to work together to bend the divide between art and craft. Born out of the feminist movement, the project was formed with an explicit recognition of quilts as women’s work but with a recognition that artists were eager to try new media. By 1982, more than fifty women participated in the project including eighteen graphic artists and sixteen needle artists. Faith Ringgold was one of artists who worked on the project.
