Michael James’s 1978 The Quiltmaker’s Handbook is a textbook for quiltmaking emphasizing the importance of gaining intimate knowledge of the process in order to “transition from the conventional, anonymous image to one that is more personally expressive.”  James made Elaborated Tangram to demonstrate contemporary piecing with visually complex designs.
