Scherenschnitte, or fold-and-cut, designs were common among 19th-century Pennsylvanians of German descent. It is possible that these quilts migrated to the Hawaiian Islands with missionaries and other settlers, providing an inspiration for the emblematic Hawaiian applique quilt.
