The star is one of the most versatile patterns in American quiltmaking. Lone Star, Feathered Star, LeMoyne Star—the possibilities are endless. Perhaps that's why star patterns have endured for two centuries. The huge size of this quilt—more than nine feet on each side—is characteristic of Lone Stars from the first half of the 19th century. The quilter has chosen four modest calicoes. The fabrics are simple, relatively inexpensive roller prints of the type popular between 1830-1850. While not remarkable individually, they are transformed when juxtaposed. The vivid blue pulsating next to the bright yellow evokes bursting fireworks.
