Mosaic patchwork, while British in origin, quickly made its way to America. The Cockey family, with which this quilt is connected, was a prominent Baltimore-area family. A doctor from Frederick, Maryland, John Paul Cockey married Eliza Kelso, daughter of John Kelso, who was a Baltimore merchant. It is possible that Eliza was the maker of the quilt.
