Louise Thonstad, who was born in Norway in 1885 and immigrated with her family to the Dakota Territory, made this quilt around 1935. Louise lived most of her life in Deadwood, South Dakota. Her quilt underscores the fact that many Norwegian immigrants embraced quiltmaking as a way to more quickly assimilate into the culture of their new country.
