During the late 19th century, many popular quilt styles were made with the foundation piecing method, including variations of the Log Cabin pattern, crazy quilts, and string quilts. This Log Cabin Courthouse Steps quilt was hand pieced to a foundation fabric. Typically the foundation fabric doubled as a quilt’s inner layer of batting.
