The unknown maker of this quilt was clearly inspired by Chinese dragon imagery. Was she inspired by the Qing Dynasty imperial flag (next image) or something else? Likely we’ll never know, but we do know that the use of “exotic” Chinese imagery was common in American popular culture of the early twentieth century, when this quilt was probably made.
