Red and green floral appliqué quilts were popular in the United States between 1840 and 1880. This maker had a unique vision, creating an out-of-the-ordinary quilt inspired by a popular style. She surrounded two large center blocks—one a swirling Princess Feather and the other a pinwheel made of budding Christmas Cactus fronds—with smaller appliqué blocks.  In doing so, she combined the two formats generally used in red and green appliqué quilts—the four block format and the multiple block style—and created an unusual floral appliqué sampler.
