Although little evidence supports the existence of an Underground Railroad quilt code, some quiltmakers did use quiltmaking to make statements against slavery.

In the years prior to the Civil War, many Quakers avoided purchasing goods produced with slave labor, including American cottons. Scholars have theorized that this quilt, made by a member of a prominent Philadelphia Quaker family, features imported English fabric as a means of boycotting slavery.
