The FDR Library has nine quilts in its collection, some of which were given as gifts, including this Donkey Quilt, commemorating Roosevelt’s victory in the 1936 election over Republican Alfred M. Landon of Kansas. Embroidered on the stars are the names of the forty-eight states and the number of electoral votes each cast. The total number won by the President is embroidered in the center, along with the words, “In Honor of Franklin D. Roosevelt,” while the number won by Landon appears in the bottom border, between the stars for the only two states that went Republican. Sadly, the maker is unknown, yet their allegiance to the Democratic Party and Roosevelt Administration is clear.
