Artists working for the Index of American Design approached their paintings of quilts in a variety of ways, resulting in striking artworks. Some, like Elbert S. Mowery, created renderings of details of quilts with crisp modernist lines. Others created full reproductions of quilts, and some painted portions while providing a drawing showing the quilt’s overall layout. This is the painting Mowery is at work on in the previous photograph.
