Quiltmakers in Migratory Labor Camps focused on quilting not only as a leisure activity but as a form of mutual aid. The Home Makers Club at the Shafter Camp made “comforts” and mattresses and then held a drawing to determine which families would get them. At the Marysville Camp, clubs stitched quilts to give to newcomers to the camp.  Clubs at other camps made quilts to raffle to raise proceeds for other mutual aid efforts, such as Christmas toys. The Shafter Camp also had a system for families to “check-out” and “turn in” quilts, just like one would do with books at the library.
