Many of the Milwaukee Handicraft Project designs were highly stylized, including this horse coverlet featuring a sleek curved line connecting the horse’s legs, rather than a complex rendering of a realistic animal. Yet some of the appliqué motifs were deceptively hard to execute, indeed challenging for novice stitchers, with their small, irregular shapes.
