The 1939 Milwaukee Handicraft Project catalog listed this modernist appliqué wallhanging as “Bird and Beast.” It features a symmetrical design comprised of alternating rows of appliqué motifs, starting with simple peacock blue circles stitched onto a rust ground, then rust-colored geese in flight tipped with navy blue beaks and tails, then two rows of an abstract snaking rust line bisecting a sulfur yellow stripe framed with blue fabric bordering a stylized stem and leaf design in rust. Two rows of the “beast”—a rust-colored deer or unicorn featuring fine navy detailing for the horn, tail, and hooves—alternate with a zigzag design flanking an appliquéd row of flowers and crosses.
