The water frame, patented by Richard Arkwright in England in 1769, uses water power to spin fibers into yarn. In 1771, Arkwright installed water frames in his cotton mill in Derbyshire, establishing one of the first true factories, a place to house manufacturing machines, not just a group of individual workers.
