The crazy quilt embodies the ethos of the late Victorian period. Inspired by Japanese decorative arts and English needlework, makers spent months and sometimes years embellishing these quilts. Crazy quilts gave women an outlet for their needlework and artistic skills as well. The proper Victorian homemaker created an atmosphere of escape and luxury in her home for the overstimulated husband of the modern industrial era. Crazy quilts fit the plush and luxurious aesthetic of the home and often incorporated imagery of nature, children, and exotic foreign locations.
