Maud McPherson Shannon surely spent dozens if not hundreds of hours completing 24 Crazy quilt blocks, four of which are pictured here. Late-Victorian, upper- and middle-class British and American women possessed sufficient leisure time to perform such intricate and bountiful piecing, appliqué, and, especially, embroidery. And yet, Maud Shannon never put the blocks together into a completed quilt. We do not know what kept her from finishing, but we can admire her fine workmanship as well as the array of typical motifs and stitches she used.
