Jennie Jones‘s parents immigrated to the USA and Jennie was born in Chicago. She was a Welsh speaker. This nine block quilt won first prize in a Chicago exhibition in 1884 and was sent back to family in Wales early in the twentieth century, indicative of the transatlantic connections that existed. The layout and the border are very much an American design with the border pattern worked in chenille and ribbon. The quilt contains an abundance of floral motifs using a mixture of embroidery, ribbonwork, and painting. There are some beaded motifs, as well as an embroidered American flag, an exotic bird, and some pre-embroidered decorations. A range of embroidery stitches in complex combinations embellish the edges of the patches, similar to the patterns that were published by many companies.
