Nineteenth-century American quiltmakers have been credited with developing and/or exploiting the use of repeating construction units, or “blocks,” in quiltmaking. Although some early examples of Crazy quilts used an “allover” format, wherein repeating construction units were not used or were not readily visible, American quiltmakers quickly adapted the Crazy quilt style to a block quilt format. This example has a particularly American flavor, with an appliquéd and embroidered national flag featured prominently in the bottom row.
