Consisting of randomly or figuratively shaped pieces of fabric appliquéd onto a background, so-called “tile quilts” are often associated with Crazy quilts because of their collaged nature and haphazard appearance.  However, unlike Crazy quilts, which were typically made of silk fabrics pieced onto a foundation fabric, tile quilts are usually made of appliquéd cotton and feature a border, or “grout,” separating each piece.  In addition, tile quilts do not normally display intricate embroidery or other fancy needlework techniques as do most Crazy quilts.
