Joyce Kozloff, along with Miriam Schapiro, was a founder of the Pattern and Decoration movement, which consciously referenced and placed value on traditionally female forms of art such as embroidery and patchwork. In their emphasis on the ornamental aspects of needlework, their work sometimes resembled the complex, patterned surfaces of Crazy quilts.
