Boro patchwork is a tradition based on necessity and thrift. For generations, Japanese farmers and rural workers patched and repatched their indigo-dyed ramie (and later, cotton) textiles in order to extend their useful life. The resulting garments and bed covers are encrusted with layer upon layer of fabric and running stitches.
