Technological innovations, adaptation of guidelines governing the Amish lifestyle, and interaction with the dominant culture have all changed Amish society over the years. As part of these changes, quilts have changed too. As this clothes line reveals, some Amish families continue to use quilts made at home. Seemingly traditional ways of doing things coexist with more modern conveniences, as the Amish have become masterful at adapting technologies and commercial products to suit their own needs. For example, one might retrofit a high powered kitchen mixer with a nine-volt battery, or hook an air compresser up to a state-of-the-art sewing machine. A mother might use a pre-stamped quilt rather than piece a top herself, then host a quilting party with her female relatives to complete it.
