Known within Amish communities as “plain quilts,” many of these seemingly simple whole cloth variations are anything but plain. The unpieced quilt top, often with a single, or as in this example, double frame, served as a vast canvas for the intricate quilting designs for which Amish quilters have become famous. Look closely to see ornately snaking feathers and wreaths, laid out with a skillful sense of symmetry, space, and scale.
