Here a group of friends gather to contribute to quilt panels. The photographer’s caption reads:

“From San Francisco, Sister Sistah, Sister Dana Van Iquity and Sister Kitty Catalyst O.C.P. at San Francisco's NAMES Project Quilt office on Market St. working on the Sister's Nuns of The Above memorial quilt.”

This process of groups working together with a common purpose of creating a quilt has a long history.  Just as in 19th-century quilting frolics, the purpose here is both social and productive, with the larger goal of commemorating those who died of AIDS and raising awareness to continue the fight.
