Jean Ray Laury wrote Ápplique Stitchery in 1966 and Quilts & Coverlets: A Contemporary Approach in 1970. Beth Gutcheon followed with The Perfect Patchwork Primer in 1973, and Michael James wrote his first book, The Quiltmaker’s Handbook, in 1978. These are a small sample of the how-to quilt books that came out in the early decades of this wave of professionalization.
