In 1905, Ladies’ Home Journal hired five artists to develop original appliqué designs for the magazine; the general response, however, was that the designs were too difficult to replicate. Maxfield Parrish, painter and illustrator, designed “A Circus Bedquilt.” Although very few quilts have probably been made using Parrish’s illustrations, it has had a long-lasting effect. Hortense Beck made her version of the quilt in 1994.
