In 1846 The Ladies of the Sewing Circle of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, presented Ann Rhees with this quilt in appreciation for her deep and abiding faith through decades of service to the church. This quilt is one of three known to have been made by the group. Church sewing circles were one of the means women found to participate in the public life of their communities in socially acceptable ways.
