In 1973, Marilynn Gelfman Karp asked sixty friends and family members to create a red, white, and blue fabric square with patriotic designs or personal symbols for her sampler quilt to commemorate the Bicentennial. Forty-eight patches were completed, and Karp put them together in 1974. Karp calls this “a contemporary art friendship quilt.”
