One of the concerns of second and third-wave feminism has been the proliferation of nuclear materials and weapons. One concern of some feminist writers has been the effect of nuclear materials on the occurrence of cancer and fertility rates of people living in areas around nuclear testing facilities. Karen Silkwood, commemorated in this detail, died under suspicious circumstances the same week that she was preparing evidence of negligence by the chemical company she worked for. Feminist activists included this block in their Women in Struggle quilt shown at International Women’s Day in 1983.
