Ruby Short McKim was a syndicated quilt columnist, pattern designer, and owner of a mail-order pattern and kit company. Her State Flowers pattern ran as a serial pattern in several newspapers, some of which also ran contests for those who produced finished quilts.

Eda Sharpe of Noblesville, Indiana, completed this quilt in 1932 from patterns published in the Indianapolis Star, which published one pattern each week beginning in September 1931. Eda added her own sashing strips and scalloped borders.
