Quilts made by women in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, have hung on art museum walls across the country. Typically those quilts are abstract compositions with bold geometric designs. In contrast, this quilt, also from Gee’s Bend, features a repeat block pattern presented in a fairly orderly way, a quilt type Gee’s Bend quiltmakers call “Pretty Quilts,” according to folklorist Bernard Herman. Interestingly, this quilt is backed with a craft print for a tote bag.
